Seizures: Know the Types
How are seizures classified? They are based on a description of the areas of the brain affected during the seizure. EEG changes can show different seizure types.
Partial seizures
In this type of seizure, an electrical disturbance starts in one hemisphere of the brain, and it may not end there. It may move on to other areas, causing a person to become unconscious. Partial seizures can spread to involve both hemispheres of the brain. This resulting seizure is called "secondarily generalized."
Simple partial seizures
A person with this type of seizure is still conscious. This person may have twitching of a limb, a funny taste, or an unusual feeling such as pins and needles. These signs and symptoms are largely due to the focus of the seizure within the brain.
